Munchkin Fresh Food Feeders

IMG_7508

Munchkin Fresh Food Feeders are one of my go to shower gifts. I just love this product and find it odd that I had never heard about it prior to having Isabelle. When I was in the States for a few months, we were starting to introduce food to little Isabelle. We started with puree apple sauce, pears, sweet potatoes, Cheerios etc… Then discovered these.

These Fresh Food Feeders are great. You can put all kinds of food it and the baby can’t choke on it. They have to suck the food out. Here are some great examples of food that I personally used in a mesh feeder:

  • Pears
  • Apples
  • Strawberries
  • Peaches
  • Banana’s (Warning! This one is very messy)
  • Mum Mum’s
  • Cheerios
  • Puffs
  • Ice cubes of formula (or breast milk)

Here are some other great ideas for food to use in a mesh food feeder:

  • Chunks of melon
  • Frozen blueberries
  • Frozen grapes

What also makes this product super awesome, is if you’re shopping, attach the a toy or pacifier clip to the handle, clip it to the baby’s bib and keep shopping. No worries about food falling on the floor.

Where can you buy this Fresh Food Feeder? You can buy them right on Amazon.ca for under $12.

Our Mimijumi Adventures – Day 1 & 2

In the past, I’ve mentioned that our little Katie won’t take any bottles. We’ve tried:

  • 12 different bottle nipples
  • Advent nipple shields
  • 5 or 6 different types of soothers
  • Hired a lactation consultant to help with bottle feedings
  • Had her tongue tie snipped

… and nothing is working for us.

Yesterday, my Mimijumi bottles arrived. With a $60 USD price tag, I’m really hoping this works.

At mimijumi, we believe in better feeding for all babies. mimijumi baby bottles look and feel like a real breast, giving babies the most natural feeding experience possible and avoiding the nipple confusion that often results from bottle feeding.

Day 1

IMG_6055 (Video of Katie with bottle on Day 1)

Yesterday was our first day with the bottle. What we did:

  • Used room temperature Similac pre-made formula
  • My mom gave it to her while I went for a walk

Result:

Not successful. On the bright side, she did entertain the nipple in her mouth and didn’t scream during the entire process. She had lots of formula on her, but didn’t actually shallow any. I tried to give her the bottle and got the same result. No tears, but no drinking.

Day 2

Today was day 2 and it didn’t go as well as yesterday. What we did:

  • Gave freshly pumped breastmilk
  • My mom gave it to her while I was at the house, not necessarily in the same room.
  • I tried to give it to her by:
    • standing up and walking around
    • facing away from me
    • singing and talking to her
    • placing her on my breastfeeding pillow and doing the old switcheroo

Result:

Not successful. No bright side today. She cried a lot more than yesterday when we tried and didn’t entertain the bottle in her mouth at all.

Over the next 24 hours, I’d like to try to use the nipple as a teether. I might try to warm it up by placing it under warm water or putting in the fridge so it’s a bit cooler. Not sure if this will help her get used to the nipple or make my situation worse.

One of the reasons I purchased this product is because of their return policy.

If your baby continues to refuse the bottle, please return the product with its original packing

I’m going to give it 2 weeks. If it doesn’t work, *sigh*, I’ll return them. I really, really want this to work.

Any more advice?

My top 3 apps for a 12 to 20 month old

Since my Top Maternity Apps blog post was such a hit (CTV Morning Live Video). I’ve decided to create a list of 3 great apps for 12 to 20 month olds.

Mr. Potato Head – Create & Play: School Edition (free)

With this app, she’s learning to drag and drop objects into a toy box and replace facial features on Mr. Potato Head. Also, there is a fun camera feature in this game that enables you to take a screen shot of your Mr. Potato Head in action.

WheelsOnBus (Free or Pay)

We paid for the full version of this app, because our daughter loved it so much. There are many activities that she can do using this app. She can pretend she’s a bus driver, play a memory card game, learn about emergency vehicles with the tiny train and use the coloring book. Her favorite thing about this app is the song. She’s able to tell me that she wants this app on when she says “bébé”, because she wants to see the baby go “wah wah wah”. I thought this app was worth buying the full version.

KidsDoodle (free)

Our daughter loves colouring and drawing. She has a few Magna Doodle type toys and loves all of them. When we forget these toys in the car, I can often distract her with this app. The simple gesture of waving your finger around on the screen and a line happens to appear is enough to keep her attention for a few minutes.

Other apps that we continue to use on a daily basis are:

YouTube (free)

I create TV and music playlists for my daughter using YouTube. We have songs from Yo Gabba Gabba to the Sesame Street gang. TV shows from Dora to Mickey Mouse classics.

Relax Melodies (free)

We still use this app on a nightly basis. Our house is very small and we’ve found that this app helps her get a good night sleep and drain out some of the noise from the other rooms at night.

Do you have any apps that you like to use with your kids? What are they and what age are they playing it? I’m also looking for suggestions on French apps for kids.

Baby shower gift ideas

IMG_0046

I was asked recently asked to suggest a few gift ideas for attending a friend’s baby shower.  Here is a list of a few things that I absolutely loved while on maternity leave and shortly after:

Loved this carrier. I had originally bought the Baby Bjorn carrier second-hand. I didn’t love it as much as the Ergo. The padding for the shoulders made a huge difference for me. In case you’re wondering, I never ended up buying the infant insert , but I did do the receiving blanket trick to use the carrier when she was very young.

Loved and still love this book.

We’ve just recently stopped using these. These feeders were great when our daughter was learning to self feed. We could put all kind of things in these feeders and not have to worry about her choking. My trick when I was shopping? Fill them up with Cheerios or Goldfish, attach a pacifier cord to it and let her munch on it while you browse your little heart away.

Once she grew out of the baby bath, we moved her to the inflatable duck bath. It was great when she was just learning how to sit up. It was soft on her back to keep her upright in the tub. Highly recommend.

She was always (and still is) attracted to books that are touch-n-feel. There are lots to choose from. I like the ones about animals.

I found suction bowls hard to find in the stores. Amazon has a few different ones to choose from. We have these ones and love them.

  • Diapers size 4

Because I feel like our daughter will be in size 4 diapers f-o-r-e-v-e-r.

  • PJ’s with zippers only (18 months +)

Buttons are stupid. Our kid moves around all the time. I can’t imagine trying to do up buttons when she’s wiggling around. I also recommend buying 18 month + sleepers or pj’s, because everyone will buy the mommy-to-be 12 months and under pjs.

What are your go to shower gifts? Let me know in the comment section below.

Mr. Stork has arrived in Ottawa!

I don’t know about you, but it feels like Mr. Stork has arrived in Ottawa. If feels like a baby boom is happening in Ottawa. Don’t you feel like everyone you know has either had a baby, having a baby or trying to have a baby. It’s wonderful news. All of it. Super excited for all of you and your friends. We’re adding to Ottawa’s population people! Keep it up!

I have to admit that when someone tells me their having a baby, I’m eager to tell them about all the cool websites, checklists and forums that they should sign up for.  I’m that guy. Some websites that offered me some fabulous advice and tips that I just have to share with everyone.

When I was pregnant, I was very thankful when people offered their two cents. Of course, you always take what you want from it and leave the rest, which is what I hope you will do with the following list.

Here is my list of great websites and resources that you should pay attention to if you are trying to get pregnant, are pregnant or have a little one.

Trying to have a baby

Getting pregnant wasn’t easy for my husband and I (I’ll save that story for another blog post). While we were trying to “relax and let it happen”, here are a few websites that I kept my eyes on while we were trying to conceive (TTC).

Baby Centre – Community: They have a great TTC section for those that want to talk with others that are going through the same thing. They also have subgroups for those dealing with more specific and/or delicate situations.

Fertility Friend: A great online tracking tool to figure out your ovulation window. If you are tracking your temperature, this site will be very useful for you. They also have a great app that you can download for free.

Ottawa Fertility Center: I count myself very lucky to have been refered here. This clinic took really good care of us and if you ever have to visit this center, I hope they take good care of you too.

Early Pregnancy Tests Online: Buying all those pregnancy and ovulation tests can really add up. This website has great prices on everything you’ll need TTC.

Your pregnant (!*$&!)

Congrats! This is the time to take care of yourself and indulge in those crazy cravings (buffalo chicken wraps and red delicious apples for me!). Don’t worry about how much you’re sleeping. Do it. Take advantage of it. You’ll be surprised how little you’ll get later (unless you have a “angel baby” that sleeps all night from day 1… then I hate you… just kidding.. sort of).

Baby Centre – Community: Once you’re pregnant, move over to the pregnancy section. Baby Centre has also created birth groups, so that you can interact with other moms who are due around the same time as you. Baby Centre also has some great apps that you can download which will track your baby’s progress week by week.

Baby Centre – Baby Registry Checklist: I love lists. This is a great one to get your baby registry up and going. It’s very overwhelming all the stuff you need to buy. This is a great checklist to get you started.

Old Navy Maternity: Shortly after you get pregnant you’ll start to notice that some things that fit loose one day, might be a little tighter the next. In comes maternity clothing. You may be lucky and get a wack load of clothing that you’re previous pregnant friend has and lets you borrow, but you might be pregnant in the opposite season as her or what she’s lending to you really isn’t your style.  Every Old Navy in Canada, I believe as of February 2013, should now have a small maternity clothing section. Old Navy often have sales on clothing (40% off everything!). So keep an eye out for these sales. Thyme and Motherhood Maternity also have good sales too once in a while.

Freebies for new moms: Sign up for ALL OF THEM. So fun!

Baby is here (!*$&! x2)

Now let the fun begin. Most of us have no idea what were doing. Just keep in mind, this baby has never had a parent before you, so don’t worry if you mess up, it can judge you.

A Cup of Joe (blog): I love this blog and her writing style. She’s a mom with two boys living in New York. My favorite blog post on her blog, is actually written by her husband. Every new mom and dad should read 8 confessions of a new dad. I have to agree with the 9 month comment. Let me know what you think.

Jenny wears glasses list of Ottawa consignment stores: For everything else that you didn’t get at your baby shower, don’t forget to go to visit consignment stores. You can often find what you need, in great condition and at a lower price.

Sleep Easy Solution: For those parents that might need to sleep train their kid. This book saved us.  I buy it for every baby shower I go to now. I always hope that you will never have to open or use this book, but I always find it comforting to know that you have it in your back pocket.

Information about Breath Holding Spells: Now I’m not adding this here to scare anyone, it’s more for information purposes. I never heard of this before I had my daughter and knew nothing about it.

What are your favorite websites/resources/tips? Let me know. I would love to hear them.

Sale on Books for Children at Bookoutlet.ca

Did you know that there is only 96 days until Christmas?!?!?

That’s why I’m so happy to see that the BookOutlet.ca is having a crazy sale on children books right now. Here is a list of a few books that my daughter loved from age 6 – 12 months and hope that your kids will love them too:

Baby Shaker Teethers ($2.99) – She loved this book. Not only are the images very colourful, the teether works great to keep her distracted while we were out and about.

Busy Zoo ($3.99) – She liked her crinkly fabric books. We had this one, a Curious George one and a Lamaze company one.

Bright Baby ($8.49) – This set makes an excellent baby shower gift. A friend of ours got us this set and it includes similar items to the two mentioned above and a bathtime book.

That’s Not My Meerkat ($3.99), That’s Not My Snowman ($3.49), That’s Not My Raindeer ($3.99) – Our daughter loves these Usborne Touchy Feely Books, although we never read the meerkat one, we did read about the polar bear, puppy, cat, tractor and train.

Itsy Bitsy Spider Finger Puppet Book ($2.99) – This book can turn any sad face into a happy face. We actually bought this book in French from Chapters. Just a little wiggle from this spider can really make her day.

Here are a list of books that I remember loving as a child that are on sale:

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly ($3.99) – I can’t wait to buy this for my daughter. I remember loving this book as a child.

Baby Beluga ($3.49) – Anything by Raffi is a winner for me.

Shipping is not free over $25+, but it’s very reasonable within Canada (almost free).

If you have any questions about any of the books I’ve mentioned above, please comment in the section below.

Although this post may contain Bookoutlet.ca affiliate links, the comments and recommendations are completely my own. I would recommend these books regardless of being affiliated with this company. Just a bonus that they are having a sale on these books right now. Enjoy!

The Best Seller In Bargain Books

My adventures with liquid eyeliner (Thanks to Bella Reina Spa)

photo 1

It’s no secret that I’m in need of beauty advice*. I may not be a beauty expert… actually I could be based on this definition of an expert on Urban Dictionary… anyways, like I was saying, I may not be a beauty expert, but I’m still someone who is willing to try anything once. Even if that anything is purple liquid eye liner (!$&#&). Yeah. Let’s do it.

Bella Reina Spa is spa in the city of Delray Beach, FL**. This spa may be based in Florida, but it also has an online store called Mi Bella Reina, which ships to us Canadians (yippee!). A few weeks ago Bella Reina Spa contacted me and asked me if I would like to try one of their makeup products. I said sure, why not? I’ll try anything once.

The “something” they sent me was Bella Reina Waterproof Liquid Liner Pen in Royal Plum***.

Upon receiving this product, the first thing I did was watch YouTube video’s on how to apply liquid liner. The thought of using a liquid eye liner scared me. I’m so used to using a pencil, I wasn’t sure if my shaky hand would be able to handle it.

After watching these videos, I felt a lot more confident about being able to put it on. The videos made it really easy for me to understand how to apply liquid liner and made me appreciate that the one that Bella Reina sent me was a great beginner liner for me to try (felt tip).

Here is a picture of my first attempt:

photo 2

Kind of messy, huh?

This is my second attempt:

photo 3

Not perfect but much better. I think I’m getting the hang of this.

If you are looking to try a new felt tip liquid eye liner, I would strongly recommend this one. I also love that it’s waterproof and was very easy to remove with a little dab of coconut oil.

I would like to thank Bella Reina Spa for sending me this liquid liner for me to try. I think I may have found a new appreciation for liquid eye liner and yes, I do feel like I unleashed my inner Queen. If you have any questions about Bella Reina Spa and products, you can contact them here.

Do you use liquid eye liner? Are you any good at applying? Any tips for applying it? Do you use it daily or only for special occasions?

* Here is the video I uploaded to YouTube about how I put on my makeup in the morning.

** For those of you that only have been to Orlando and Key West, Delray Beach is roughly: 2 hours from Naples, FL, 3 hours to Walt Disney World, 4 hours from Key West, FL and 23 hour drive from the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa, ON.

*** Plum is not a colour that I would normally wear, but I did like the boldness of the colour. If you’re curious to see what’s the best eye shadow colours for your eyes, check out this link here.

Dirkje Baby Jeans (Review for Lapeetz.com)

Remember a few weeks ago, I reviewed some LAVISHY wallet’s for the website Lapeetz.com? This time I’m reviewing Dirkje Jeans for children.

Dirkje is a company based in the Netherlands. Dirkje stands for a very extended collection babywear on an affordable price level.

Lapeetz.com currently has Dirkje jeans for sale for $12.99 to $16.99 on his website. The jeans come in the following sizes:

  • 9M
  • 12M
  • 18M
  • 24M
  • 3Y
  • 4Y

A couple of weeks ago the owner of Lapeetz.com gave me a pair of Dirkje jeans to try on my daughter. I wanted to wait a couple of weeks and use them a few times before I wrote my review.

IMG_6523

Three things I really liked about Dirkje jeans:

  • Style: I thought these jeans were quite stylish
  • Durable and easy to clean: These jeans survived a few daycare visits and a trip to the Museum of Science and Technology during Marker Faire (see above).
  • Texture and fabric: I’m always worried when I buy jeans for my daughter that they are going to have that rough jean feel to them. These were actually quite soft and stretchy. Great for little ones.

One thing I didn’t love (because that does happen sometimes):

  • Size: The jean length was really great for my daughter, but it was a bit big around the waist for her. But really, this could happen with any brand of clothing.

IMG_6689

Would I buy these jeans in a store?

Absolutely. Like I said above, I really like the style, quality and softness of the product. They were really easy to clean and survived a few daycare trips (daycare approved!).

Are you interested in purchasing these jeans?

You can find Lapeeze’s products in-store at:

BUT if you visit Lapeetz online store and use the code: JENNYWEARSGLASSES You will get 20% off your entire order (coupon code is good until October 31, 2014).

Review of LAVISHY Wallets (from Lapeetz.com)

Pssst.. There’s a new Ottawa-based online store that just opened up and I need to tell you about it! It’s called Lapeetz. It’s an online store that mostly sells good quality and ethically made products, such as LAVISHY wallets, Dirkje baby wear and bohemian style purses and kid sweaters. You’ve got to have a look.

Lapeetz - Lavishy Wallets

The owner of Lapeetz was kind enough to let me try out a LAVISHY wallet so I could review it here. If you’re not familiar with LAVISHY wallets, LAVISHY is a Toronto based Canadian fashion accessory and design company. The company was founded in 2001. Since then, they have grown into this fabulous company that sells good quality animal-friendly vegan products (like these wallets).

Blue Bird Wallet

The wallet that I’ve been using for the past week is the stylish, faux leather, small blue bird appliqué wallet. I just love it. It makes me smile every time I pull it out of my purse. It fits everything that I would want to put in my wallet (cards, money, coupons, more money). It’s very functional and just the right size to throw into any purse (or diaper bag).

The LAVISHY wallets that Lapeetz is selling are very affordable:

$24.99 for the larger size

$19.99 for the smaller size

$9.99 for the coin purse

In addition to selling wallets, he is also selling LAVISHY luggage tags, coin purses and passport holders.

Have I convinced you on how cute these wallets are yet? Great! Do you want one? Yup! The owner of Lapeetz was kind enough to give me one of these fabulous wallets to giveaway to one lucky reader. We’re giving away the large peacock wallet. I love this one! Not only are peacocks in, the embroidery on this wallet is beautiful. Its thin design is great to fit in any size purse. It would also make a great birthday or Christmas gift for someone you love!

Peacock Wallet

This wallet features:

  • A funky embroidered peacock
  • 1 photo ID slot
  • 12 card slots
  • 2 sections for bills and recipts
  • 1 zipper closure for your change
  • Magnetic clasp

Please comment below and let me know what product you would like to receive for Christmas off the Lapeetz website to be entered into the giveaway. Giveaway is to open to all Canadian residents. Draw will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014. All entries must be in by midnight on Friday, August 22 at 11:59pm. You will be contact by email if you win.

Not interested in entering the giveaway, but still interested in purchasing one of these products?

** I just wanted to give a BIG THANK YOU to Lapeetz for providing the above product to review, as well as giving me one LAVISHY wallet to giveaway to a lucky reader. The opinions shared are my own and are honest.
